As international visiting artist at LARQ Tasmania, during my two months residency I worked on location at Mount Lyell Coppermine and Henty Goldmine. Underground I drew in workshops where the mines’ massive operating machines were being repaired. I also met the miners, men and women, who operated these giant boggers, boomers and trucks.

“We drove further and further down, everything in grey, tonal, blackness. There was no colour, only the orange headlamps creating and reflecting artificial colours. The challenge for me was how to portray this tonal complexity, devoid of sunlight and bright colour. I had drawn many times in industrial environments but never one so extreme, so devoid of light.”
